EPL: Alli double sees Spurs past Southampton

Dele Alli scored twice as Tottenham came back from behind to win emphatically, 4-1, at Southampton on Wednesday.

Harry Kane, who missed a penalty, and substitute Son Heung-min were also on the score-sheet in a game that saw Virgil van Dijk give Southampton an early lead.

Nathan Redmond was sent off soon after Kane had made it 2-1 and although the England striker failed to convert the resulting penalty Southampton tried in vain to prevent a hefty defeat that moved Tottenham to within a point of fourth-place Arsenal in the Premier League table.

It took Southampton all of 69 seconds to take the lead, through van Dijk.

The Netherlands defender, coveted by a number of Premier League rivals and valued in the £30million bracket, rose to meet James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick to send a downward header beyond Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal.

The home side were full of energy and aggression – the brand of football Pochettino brought with him to the St Mary’s Stadium before leaving for Tottenham in May 2014.

The Argentinian could not have enjoyed the way his players were being put under constant pressure and there were a number of nervy moments as they attempted to stem the tide of Saints attacks.

Former Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama had given away the free-kick for the goal on his first return to his old club and Mousa Dembele was booked for chopping Nathan Redmond down to end another attack.

Fraser Forster had little to do in the Southampton goal but found himself picking the ball out of the net in the 19th minute when Moussa Sissoko saw his cross from the left deflected upwards off Redmond.

That allowed Alli to out-jump van Dijk and plant a header past Forster that went in off a post.

Parity perhaps flattered Tottenham but they made good use of their good fortune to fashion a number of chances.

Christian Eriksen twice failed to hit the target after getting himself into promising shooting positions before Wanyama, having burst into the box and got the better of van Dijk, saw his shot blocked by Saints skipper Jose Fonte.

Tottenham made a much better start to the second half and took the lead in the 52nd minute through the previously-dormant Kane from a corner won by Kyle Walker and delivered by Eriksen. Southampton’s marking was poor to say the least as the England striker rose unchallenged to head into the top corner.

Jose Fonte headed over from a free-kick at the other end before the home side found themselves a man down when Redmond was sent off for impeding Alli from behind in the act of shooting.

Referee Mike Dean awarded a penalty and sent Redmond packing before Kane stepped up to send the spot-kick soaring over the bar in the style of a rugby conversion.

The extra man was proving useful to Tottenham and Southampton were relieved when Eriksen’s effort bounced back off the crossbar.

Danny Rose poked another effort wide after Saints made a triple substitution, with Dusan Tadic, Shane Long and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg coming on to pep up their depleted ranks with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Lloris had been a spectator for a while but almost gifted Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, one of three 72nd-minute Saints subs, a comedy equaliser.

The Frenchman kicked the ball straight to Højbjerg, who was so surprised he sent the ball straight back instead of locating an empty net.

Son Heung-min, Tottenham’s first substitute, wrapped up victory in the 85th minute, with a cool finish across Forster after Saints had been caught on the break.

Southampton couldn’t wait for the final whistle, especially after Alli strode through to slot in a fourth after the hosts were caught out at the back once again.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Earns Man Utd Third Win In A Row

Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his fine form with two goals for Manchester United that were enough to beat West Bromwich Albion.

United took a fifth-minute lead at The Hawthorns as Jesse Lingard’s first-time cross was headed in by Ibrahimovic.

Wayne Rooney almost doubled the score but his fierce shot was tipped on to the bar by Ben Foster, while Salomon Rondon’s first-half header went narrowly wide for West Brom.

Ibrahimovic produced his 11th Premier League goal of the season when he received Rooney’s pass, turned and saw his deflected shot go in.

The win, United’s third in a row, put them seven points above their opponents, and level with Tottenham Hotspur, who play Burnley on Sunday.

Another big performer on the day was Alvaro Negredo, who’s brace helped Middlesbrough return to winning ways as they beat Swansea City at the Riverside.

The striker broke the deadlock on 18 minutes, expertly finishing Adam Clayton’s cross past Lukasz Fabianski.

Negredo doubled the lead from the penalty spot 11 minutes later after Jordi Amat’s foul on Adam Forshaw.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea extended their lead on the Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, courtesy Diego Costa.

Saturday’s Results:

Crystal Palace 0 – 1 Chelsea

Middlesbrough 3 – 0 Swansea City

Stoke City 2 – 2 Leicester City

Sunderland 1 – 0 Watford

West Ham United 1 – 0 Hull City

West Bromwich Albion 0 – 2 Manchester United

The Stoke boss is baffled by Leicester City's furious protests after Jamie Vardy was sent off during their draw at the bet365 Stadium

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes says Leicester City are wrong to complain about a "clear" red card for Jamie Vardy.

Vardy was controversially sent off after 28 minutes of the 2-2 draw at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Leicester fans react to Vardy challenge

The striker initially left the ground as he slid in to challenge Mame Biram Diouf, but then appeared to win the ball cleanly and was stunned when referee Craig Pawson brandished a red card.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri was furious with Pawson at half-time, but Hughes cannot understand why.

"I have seen it and it was a two-footed challenge," Hughes said.

"The lad left the floor and I don't know what they are complaining about. From my point of view it was clear."

Stoke quickly raced into a two-goal lead following Vardy's dismissal, but 10-man champions Leicester fought back with goals in the last 16 minutes from Leonardo Ulloa and Daniel Amartey.

That left Stoke without a win in three Premier League matches after a collapse that replicated last season's home game against Leicester, where they also lost a two-goal advantage.

Hughes continued: "Leading 2-0 it was well deserved, we were good value for that lead and were in good shape. You have to get the job done and we didn't do that.

"They came at us and that is why they were champions last year. In the end we were lacking that spark and energy and they took advantage of that.

"You think it should be a straightforward second half, but we made it difficult and allowed them to get back into the game.

"We are in decent shape, but this game should have been won. We have big games ahead of us but you have to test yourself against them at some stage of the season."

RUMOURS: Alexis contract talks set to drag on until the summer

The Chile international is hoping for a deal worth £250,000 a week to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners are yet to make a satisfactory counter-offer.

Alexis Sanchez remains a long way away from extending his Arsenal contract after the club's offer fell well short of expectations, according to the Mirror.

The Chilean was reportedly offered a deal worth £180,000 a week, a substantial improvement on his current contract which expires in 2018.

Alexis, however, is determined to hold out for £250,000, and with talks stuck at an impasse, a resolution is not expected until the coming summer.

Neymar: I wouldn't trade any of my teammates for Ronaldo

The Brazil international would not alter the Blaugrana's attacking trio, even if he had the choice of any player from Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo may have just pipped Barcelona's Lionel Messi to claim his fourth Ballon d'Or but Neymar insists he would not replace any of his team-mates with the Portuguese.

Neymar also says he wouldn't have Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema in his side, if he had the choice, but would like to play alongside close friend Marcelo.

Asked by CNN if he could pinch one name from his arch-rivals, Neymar replied: "I would pick Marcelo.

RUMOURS: Messi to receive €500m China bid

The Argentina captain could pocket an astronomical sum should he choose to join Manuel Pellegrini in the Super League, although he is currently in talks over a new Barcelona deal.

A Chinese Super League club will try and hijack Lionel Messi's contract negotiations with Barcelona with a stunning offer worth half a billion euros, according to AS.

The Argentine is currently in talks over extending his deal at the Camp Nou, which he has called home since the age of 13.

Hebei China Fortune, however, are mulling over a bid that would be hard to refuse.

Reports suggest the club currently coached by Manuel Pellegrini could offer a five-year contract to the star, who would receive an incredible €100 million per term.

‘Focus on grassroots football’

Patrick Osueke

Former Nigeria midfielder, Waheed Akanni, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to focus on grassroots football  in the country.

Akanni, who was at the 2016 COPA Lagos Beach Soccer Tournament,  told our correspondent that poor administration was responsible for the problems facing  football in the country.

“A lot of things have been said about the sports minister, which is not right; Solomon Dalung is not the minister of football but the minster of sport. That is why we get negative answers when we push certain issues to him forgetting that he is not a football minster but the sports minister,” he said.

“I think we should go back to our drawing board because most of the problems we are facing now are as a result of our neglect of the grassroots. We have failed to pay attention to our grassroots football.

“The NFF should create a viable grassroots department, I understand the technical development wants good results at the highest level but grassroots football  is very important because the coaches will discover players.”

Ebuehi’s parents have promised me – Rohr

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has said he has received a promise from the parents from Dutch-born ADO Den Haag defender Tyronne Ebuehi he will honour his invite to play for the Super Eagles.

Ebuehi was invited for last month’s World Cup qualifier against Algeria, but he rejected the invitation, saying he wanted to focus on his club career.

“The parents told me that  he would  come if  we invite him again,” Rohr  was quoted by AfricanFootball.com as saying on Thursday.

“The player from Holland told me yes, but in the last moment he told me no.”

Rohr wanted  Ebuehi to play at  right-bach, which has seen four players featuring  in that role in the team’s last three matches – Musa Mohammed, Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo and Shehu Abdullahi.

RUMORS: Man Utd braced for £20m Schneiderlin bids

The France international midfielder is reported to be a January transfer window target for the Red Devils' Premier League rivals Everton and West Brom.
Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is interesting Everton and West Brom, with the Daily Telegraph reporting that £20 million bids are being readied.

The France international is out of favour at Old Trafford and a January move would make sense, even if the Red Devils are forced to take a hit on a player they paid £24m for in 2015.

Schneiderlin has found himself behind the likes of record signing Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera under Jose Mourinho, while Marouane Fellaini and Bastian Schweinsteiger also appear to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

At 27 years of age he needs to find regular football and it could be that he is reunited with former Southampton boss Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park in the new year, or he decides to head for The Hawthorns.

Football sex scandal: 350 victims come forward

Around 350 people have come forward to say they were sexually abused as children by youth football coaches in Britain, the National Police Chiefs’ Council said on Thursday.

The scale of the abuse began to emerge last week after a string of ex-footballers, including England internationals, told of the ordeals inflicted upon them by coaches.

“We are working closely with the Football Association to ensure that the response to this significant and growing number of victims, at all levels of football, is co-ordinated effectively,” said Chief Constable Simon Bailey, the NPCC’s lead for child protection.

The NPCC said a “significant” amount of calls had been made to police after the former players came forward to speak out about the abuse they suffered as children.

The BBC said the NPCC’s figures were based on existing investigations as well as a new helpline set up by British charity the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

The NSPCC said the helpline had received 860 calls in its first week, enabling it to refer 60 cases to police or social services within three days of the hotline launching.

That was more than triple the number of referrals made in the first three days of the helpline set up for victims of Jimmy Savile, a serial paedophile and late BBC television presenter.

The hotline is supported by England’s Football Association and backed by England captain Wayne Rooney, who is an NSPCC ambassador.

Bailey encouraged anyone with information about child abuse in football to come forward.

“We continue to encourage those who have been the victim of child sexual abuse to report it, regardless of how long ago the abuse may have taken place,” he said.

Fifteen police forces across Britain are investigating cases that have made daily headlines in the country over the past two weeks.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn said on Thursday he does not believe child abuse within British football has been covered up.

“It will help uncover some issues that can’t happen again, but do I think there has been a cover-up? I doubt it,” said Glenn, whose organisation has established an internal review of the allegations.

– Chelsea investigation –

The scale of the abuse began to emerge after ex-footballers Andy Woodward, Steve Walters and Paul Stewart revealed last week the abuse they suffered at the hands of youth football coaches.

Convicted child molester Barry Bennell has been accused by several footballers of abusing them when he worked for Crewe Alexandra, Manchester City and Stoke City across three decades beginning in the 1970s.

He is the target of five separate police investigations and on Tuesday was charged with eight counts of child abuse, prosecutors said.

Former Newcastle United player David Eatock is the latest player to speak out about his suffering.

Now 40, he said he had been a victim of former youth coach George Ormond, who was sentenced to six years in jail in 2002 for offences committed over almost 25 years.

“One of the more difficult parts for me is that I wasn’t as young as some of the others,” Eatock told the Guardian newspaper.

“I was 18 when I got to know George Ormond. I can still remember the look on his face, how terrifying it was, and how his eyes were possessed.”

He added: “I’m just glad Andy Woodward, by speaking out, has given me the strength to do this because I never would have otherwise. It has been like a knot in my brain and I’m now trying to pick apart that knot.”

Premier League leaders Chelsea have opened an investigation after newspaper claims they bought the silence of a former player who said he was abused by a scout at the club during the 1970s.

Glenn said the FA would come down hard on any club found to have hushed up reports of abuse.

“FA chairman Greg Clarke is committed to a full review, shining a torch on what has happened in the past in football,” he told a press conference at Wembley to unveil new England manager Gareth Southgate.

“If there has been evidence of hushing up, when it’s our turn to apply the rules we absolutely will, regardless of the size of club.”

Swansea 5-4 Crystal Palace: Fernando Llorente's late double seals nine-goal thriller

Fernando Llorente’s stoppage-time double gave Bob Bradley his first Premier League win as Swansea claimed a thrilling 5-4 victory over Crystal Palace.

Wilfried Zaha had put Palace ahead at the Liberty Stadium before Gylfi Sigurdsson's sensational free-kick sent the teams in level at half-time.

Leroy Fer scored two goals in three minutes after the break to put Swansea clear of their opponents, before James Tomkins and a Jack Cork own-goal brought Palace back to 3-3.

Christian Benteke looked to have won it in the 84th minute
Christian Benteke looked to have won it for Palace in the 84th minute after turning in Scott Dann's header, but substitute Llorente poked in two goals in added time to condemn Palace to their sixth Premier League defeat in a row.

Connor Wickham earned a place in Alan Pardew's starting line-up in place of Andros Townsend after coming on for the winger at half time to score against Manchester City last weekend.

Swansea remained unchanged from their 1-1 draw with Everton, with Sigurdsson again leading the line and summer signing Llorente left on the bench.

Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised for Swansea with a spectacular free-kick

Switching to a 4-4-2 paid dividends early on for Palace, with Wickham and Benteke both proving too powerful in the air for the Swansea centre-backs.

But Belgium international Benteke squandered a chance to put Palace ahead less than seven minutes in, firing over from close range after Dann's header caused a goal-mouth scramble.

Palace's aerial dominance paid off after just 19 minutes though, with Benteke rising to beat Federico Fernandez in a frequent mismatch and finding Zaha. The winger still had to turn to beat Taylor though, before firing low past Lukasz Fabianski to put Pardew's side ahead.

The away side were in control right up until the 36th minute, when Jason Puncheon foolishly pushed Cork on the edge of the area, giving Sigurdsson an opportunity to take centre-stage, and the Iceland international struck a sweet free-kick into the top left-hand corner to draw level.

Wilfried Zaha put Palace in front after a strong opening

Zaha almost put Palace back in front straight away, heading against the crossbar after Yohan Cabaye had found him at the back post.

The game turned when Wickham suffered what looked a serious injury early in the second half and was replaced by Townsend. With Palace forced to switch from their 4-4-2 formation, the Swans took control.

Bradley acted quickly to bring on Llorente before a Swansea corner and the Spaniard's resulting header from the set-piece bounced off Cabaye on the line and was poked back in by Fer to put Swansea ahead.

Fer then scored his second goal in three minutes after a free-kick deflected off Palace and Swansea players before finally glancing off Llorente and in off Fer's toe.

But Palace struck back in the 75th minute when another goal-mouth scramble finished with Tomkins scoring from close range, before Zaha's cross took a wicked deflection off Cork and looped over Fabianski to make it three apiece.

Pardew looked to have his first win since September 24 when Benteke then reacted quickest in the six-yard box to turn Dann's header towards goal and make it 4-3 with just six minutes of normal time remaining.

However, after Llorente's header was saved brilliantly by Hennessey, the former Juventus striker deflected in Sigurdsson's rebound to bring it level in the 91st minute.

And when Palace failed to clear a hopeful free-kick into the box, Llorente was there to tap in for Swansea's first league win since the opening Premier League weekend, lifting them off the bottom of the table and just two points behind Palace in 16th.

Player ratings

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Blues maintain hold of top spot

Chelsea kept hold of top spot in the Premier League after coming from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, ending the visitors' unbeaten run in the process.

Mauricio Pochettino's side opened the scoring after only 11 minutes thanks to Christian Eriksen's brilliant long-range strike, only for Pedro to level just before half-time with a sensational goal of his own.

The home team claimed all three points when Victor Moses slotted home six minutes into the second half as they made it seven league wins in a row, their best run since for six years.

Perfect partners, so can Mourinho afford to keep picking Rooney and Ibrahimovic together?

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived in Swansea with Manchester United earlier this month, he hadn’t found the net in six matches and had scored just one in his last 11.

Wayne Rooney’s form, meanwhile, had deserted him so markedly that he was starting his first league game in seven weeks after being dropped by Jose Mourinho in September.

What followed was an advert for the inclusion of both players in the regular starting XI.

The pair supplied two crucial touches each in the build-up to Paul Pogba’s opener, then Rooney crossed from the left to Ibrahimovic to steady himself and fire home a second goal.

Before half-time Rooney picked up the big No.9’s knock-down then carried the ball forward before returning the ball to Ibra for United to take a 3-0 lead.

Why United are destined to finish sixth

Having both missed the 1-1 draw with Arsenal they were back at it on Thursday against Feyenoord. First, Ibrahimovic held on to the ball long enough for Rooney to stray into the area, then delivered the pass which allowed the England skipper to loft the ball beyond Brad Jones.

Then Ibra played a neat pass for Rooney to cut back first time to Juan Mata for the second.

Add in the Swede’s attempted pass to Henrikh Mkhitaryan which was diverted in by Jones, and between them the pair have 11 goal involvements in two starts.

It is natural that two of the highest-profile and most experienced members of the United squad should be thrown into the spotlight when things are not going right, and the players themselves have admitted that their form of late has not been what it could be.
“I had a couple of games I didn’t score, I felt I was unlucky, in some moments I was not focusing like normally I should do,” said Zlatan this week.

Rooney had admitted previously: “Of course you want to play, but I’m not starting at the minute at Manchester United and I have to work hard to try to get back in the starting XI.

I had a bad game at Watford [before being dropped]. I played bad, I know that and I understand that.

I think if the manager was picking the next team on the back of that, I understand not playing.”

On the face of it, Rooney in particular still has a lot of proving to do. In a team trying its hardest to play fast, flowing attacking football, the club captain too often slows the tempo with heavy or over-elaborate first touches. Yet somehow, when finding himself is close quarters with Ibrahimovic, something clicks for Rooney. One goal and four key passes in goal-scoring moves in two starts is hard to overlook.

The same is true of Ibrahimovic too. Every one of his eight goals this season have been scored with Rooney in close proximity to him. Even when the 31-year-old has not supplied the final pass, his very threat has helped to take some of the opposition’s attention away from the giant front man. The 35-year-old has had more energy and verve in the attacking line behind him when Rooney has been left out, but rarely has he had somebody reading and reacting to his hold-up play unless the England man has been on the pitch.

So what does Mourinho do in response to this? Clearly, the likes of Mkhitaryan, Mata, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have more of the creative ability in the attacking midfield line which allows United to fashion more chances, but Rooney’s inclusion seems to make a big difference in terms of the likelihood of the team taking a decent proportion of such opportunities.

Mourinho is still trying to find the right balance in his Manchester United side, and he has yet to figure out what his best XI is. Perhaps that could yet work in Rooney’s favour. In a side which often appears to have lots of individual talent which is not quite coming together as a unit, Ibrahimovic’s connection with Rooney is the closest the manager has to a fully-functioning partnership anywhere in his squad.

So at a time when United are in desperate need of Premier League points, does Mourinho overlook arguably more deserving and more fitting choices behind Ibrahimovic and keep Rooney in his side for the time being? The latest evidence certainly suggests that the two go together like Batman and Robin. One without the other just hasn’t worked so far for United.

Why Mikel Obi Could Leave Chelsea In January

Chelsea midfielder, Mikel Obi has hinted he may leave the Premier League club in the January transfer window.

Mikel has been with Chelsea for 10 years and is their second longest-serving player behind captain John Terry but is yet to play this season.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2006 for a fee of 16 million pounds, the Super Eagles captain has won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League.

Asides the need for playing time having failed to play a single minute in the current season, there are also rumors that he has been offered an incredible $212,000-a-week deal by Chinese club, Shanghai SIPG.

Yaya Toure’s glorious two-goal return to Manchester City line-up from a similar situation could be a reason for Mikel to consider persevering but Chelsea’s great form lately means there is no weak link in the Chelsea midfield for Mikel to benefit.

While these seem to justify a move away, Mikel however, has promised to do his best when called upon to play for the London based club.

“I have never been a guy who made excuses in life, I never shy away from my responsibilities,” Mikel told BBC Sport.

“I have to keep training hard and make sure I change the manager’s mind. I have been professional, I train and work everyday with the team and I hope one day I will get to play.

“I have written my name in the history of this football club and I have won loads of trophies. I have played close to 400 game and have no single regret.

“I still want to win more and help the team. Players move on in life but I am relaxed about January. I will speak to the club find the best solution.”

Ghana on Wednesday held defending champions Nigeria to a 1-1 in their  Cameroon 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations Group B clash in Limbe.

Black   Queens’ Portia Boakye turned Arsenal Ladies forward Asisat Oshoala’s header into her own net in the 19th  minute for the Super Falcons’ lead,  but  Ghana equalised   three minutes from the break from the spot  through skipper Elizabeth Addo, who was fouled  in the Nigerian   box. Oshoala, who scored four goals in the 6-0 defeat of Mali on Sunday, failed to inspire the Falcons to victory.

However, the Falcons still top Group B with four points – same as Ghana – but with a superior goal difference. Nigeria play Kenya on Friday in their last group match while Ghana  meet Mali.

Nigeria coach Florence Omagbemi  started Chioma Wogu in place of Uchechi Sunday as they sought to maintain their superiority over their bitter rivals.

The  Falcons began the better of the two sides as they pegged the Black Queens back for the opening 18 minutes of the encounter but could not take the lead, despite creating good  chances.

Thereafter the Nigerians got anxious in front of goal and blew several goalscoring chances as they failed to take advantage of their possession.

The Queens grew into the game and got their first shot on goal in the 23rd minute through a free-kick,  which was played wide. They drew level in the 42nd minute after defender Ugo Njoku was adjudged to have fouled Ghana striker Samira Suleiman. Addo stepped up and calmly dispatched the kick past Jonathan Alaba.

In the second half, the Falcons piled much pressure on their opponents  but the Queens were well-organised in defence.

Oshoala should have put Nigeria ahead in the 63rd minute but failed to connect a cross by Francisca Ordega. And in the 77th minute, substitute Florence Dadson came close at the other end, but Jonathan timed her run well.

A move by Faith Ikidi pierced the Ghanaian defence in the 88th minute but Ordega could only fluff the opportunity with substitute Desire Oparanozie, who replaced Wogu, unmarked behind her.

In added time, Nigeria’s appeals for a penalty after goalkeeper Ama Nana Asantewaa upended Oshoala were ignored by the referee.

The Real Madrid man's thumping strike trumped the Arsenal midfielders stunning solo effort to claim the gong for Match day Four

Gareth Bale’s fabulous volley for Real Madrid in their gripping 3-3 draw with Legia Warsaw has been named match day four's UEFA Champions League Goal of the Week, presented by Nissan.

The Welshman spectacular strike from outside the area was the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history, hammering home after Cristiano Ronaldo headed on a Fabio Coentrao cross in just 57 seconds during the six-goal thriller.

Bale trumped some fine competition for the gong on a matchday of outstanding goals, which included Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil’s astonishing 88th-minute winner in his side’s victory over Ludogorets.

Latching on to a through ball, the Germany midfielder flicked it over the goalkeeper and sent two defenders sprawling, before slotting home.

Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann also missed out after earning a nomination for his clipped volley past Rostov goalkeeper Soslan Dzhanaev in stoppage time earned Atleti a hard-fought 2-1 win in the Spanish capital.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier’s stunning hit with the outside of his boot against Basel and Vadis Odjidja’s powerful strike for Legia versus Madrid also missed out on the final prize.

Cr7 vs Koke
Cristiano Ronaldo hit back furiously over an alleged homophobic attack from Atletico Madrid's Koke during the Madrid derby on Saturday, according to reports in Spain.

The two sides met in what was the final La Liga match to ever be played between the rivals at Atleti's Vicente Calderon, with Ronaldo's hat-trick handing Real a 3-0 win to keep them top of the table.

But, while Ronaldo stole the headlines because of his goals, attention was also on the Portuguese following an altercation with Atletico midfielder Koke, who is alleged to have questioned his opponent's sexuality.

When questioned by journalists after the game, Koke refused to comment, but Cope Radio later revealed the string of events explained by an unknown team-mate of Ronaldo.

The radio station explained that, when Koke and Ronaldo went head to head, the Atletico man labelled Ronaldo a "f****t" before the Real star hit back with "A f****t with a lot of money, s***head".

Ronaldo had not received a yellow card in his previous 12 meetings with Diego Simeone's men but was booked for his part in the incident.

The victory kept Zinedine Zidane's men top of the Spanish topflight having won nine and drawn three of their 12 fixtures, with a goal difference of +24.

Ronaldo leads his team-mates in terms of goals, with eight, and the forward believes that his form over the past year, for club and country, is enough for him to be awarded with the Ballon d'Or.

The 31-year-old hit 51 goals in 48 matches in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, including 16 in 12 Champions League appearances as Zinedine Zidane's side won the trophy for the second time in three years.

The forward also captained Portugal to their first major title at Euro 2016, scoring three times to help them reach the final, where a solitary strike from Eder secured a 1-0 win over France.
